This article explains Google Workspace for Education’s upcoming changes that may impact your teachers’ and students’ abilities to access Nearpod after October 23, 2023. In order to maintain access to Nearpod, Google Workspace for Education administrators must mark Nearpod as a trusted application.
What is changing?
Google is asking Google Workspace for Education administrators to review and confirm their third-party app settings by October 23, 2023. Starting October 23, 2023, users designated as under 18 won’t be able to access third-party apps that this has not been completed for.
Who is impacted?
Schools and districts that use school-administered Google accounts to log into Nearpod will be impacted. Starting October 23, 2023, all users (teachers and students) designated as under 18 won’t be able to access Nearpod if it is not marked as trusted.
Additionally, teachers that have enabled autofill student names within their Nearpod lesson settings and have students join via Google’s single sign on may be affected.
What do I need to do?
If you are a Google Workspace for Education admin for your district, you must mark Nearpod as a trusted application. You can review Google’s guidance on how to confirm third-party app settings here. Here is a summary of how Google Workspace admins can add Nearpod as a trusted application:
To access Google’s guided experience for confirming third-party app settings:
- Click here to access the first page of the guided experience
- On Step 2, “Confirm Settings for Configured Third-Party Apps,” search for Nearpod in your list of Unconfirmed apps.
- Ensure that in the “Access” column, it says “Trusted.” If it is not, select the checkbox next to Nearpod and click “Trust.”
- Click “Confirm Access Settings”
If you have already gone through Google’s guided experience and want to ensure that Nearpod is marked as Trusted:
- Sign into your Google admin console
- Go to Menu → Security → Access and Data Control → API Controls
- Click “Manage Third-Party App Access” to view your configured apps
- Hover over an app and click “View Details” to view its access setting. Ensure this says “Trusted.”
- If it does not, click “Change Access” and Select “Trusted” on Step 2. Then click “Change Access.”
If you are a teacher, you can share this help article with your school or district IT department and remind them to mark Nearpod as trusted. If you have enabled autofill student names, turning off that feature will prevent students from experiencing issues if your school or district has not yet marked Nearpod as a trusted application.
What will happen if I don’t take action?
Starting October 23, 2023, users designated as under 18 won’t be able to sign in to Nearpod with their Google credentials.
How do I know if my school or district has marked Nearpod as Trusted in Google?
You can contact your Google Workspace administrator and ask if Nearpod has been marked as trusted. After October 23, you can also check to see if your students are able to log in to Nearpod with their school-administered Google credentials.
