LTI 1.1 Canvas

Nearpod integrates seamlessly within Canvas!

This is a great tool for teachers who would like to spend less time switching between applications to take care of what's most important, student engagement.

Having the peace of mind knowing that can create and build a catalog of lessons that will help your students progress and succeed is more than enough reasoning to utilize the integration between Nearpod and Canvas

In this article we will learn:

How to set up the Nearpod LTI into your Canvas account

  1. Go to YourInstance.instructure.com/login/canvas.
  2. Log in.
  3. Click on Admin on the left side panel.
  4. Select your instance of Canvas (note: there may only be one option).
  5. Select settings from the left-hand navigation bar (at the bottom of the list).
  6. Select the admin tab at the top.
  7. Type in "Nearpod" in the search bar in the "App Center".
  8. Click on the Nearpod title.
  9. Click on the + Add App button.
  10. In the Add App window, enter the Consumer Key and Shared Secret which can automatically be generated by going to this page and clicking "generate consumer key". Once you click on it a pop-up window will come up and give you both the consumer key and shared secret.
  11. Copy and paste both the consumer key and shared secret into the add app window in Canvas and click "Add App" when you are done.
  12. Now the Nearpod app (LTI) will be added for all users in your Canvas instance!

How to Link Nearpod to your Canvas Account

    1. Go to YourInstance.instructure.com/login/canvas.
    2. Log In.
    3. Select Courses and then select a course where you are a teacher (not a student) in the course.
    4. Choose the Nearpod tab on the left-hand navigation.
    5. Log In to your Nearpod account using either your email and password or via your SSO through Google or Microsoft.
    6. You only need to login once and then you'll have your Nearpod account linked to Canvas for the duration that you are using Canvas.

Note: If you log in through Clever, Classlink or another single sign-on portal try logging in with either Microsoft SSO or Google SSO (depending on what you use in your school/district). If that doesn't work, click "forgot password" from the login page to get a password reset so you can log in.

Adding Nearpod lessons to Canvas via an assignment

When you want students to complete a Nearpod lesson as an assignment and see all of the data in the Speedgrader, you will want to add the Nearpod lesson to your assignment as an external tool! When you add a Nearpod lesson as an assignment in Canvas students will not need a code or a link. They will be able to click on the assignment and be able to join the Nearpod lesson right away. Their name will be auto-populated from their name in Canvas when they join.

  1. Create a new assignment or click on a current assignment you have created from your modules or your assignment tab.
  2. Click "edit" in the top right-hand corner of the preview of the assignment.
  3. Optional: Add instructions in the rich content editor, add points, add to assignment group and/or change how the grade is displayed.
  4. Click on "submission type" and from the drop-down choose "external tool".
  5. Click on "find".
  6. Browse the external tools and click on Nearpod (it will be in alphabetical order).
  7. This will open up all of your lessons that you have either created or added from Nearpod's library to your library.
  8. Hover over the lesson you want to add with your mouse or trackpad and click on either Live Participation or Student-Paced
  9. This will bring you back to the list of external tools and then click on "select" at the bottom.
  10. If you so choose, add a due date and an available to and from date.
  11. When you are finished, click save or save & publish (if it's ready for students to view).
  12. To complete the assignment, students will click on the assignment, click join lesson (their name will be auto-populated from their name in Canvas), and complete the Nearpod lesson as they normally would.

Note: All reports will be in Speedgrader as well as in your reports in your Nearpod account.

Accessing reports via Canvas Speedgrader

Once students complete the Nearpod assignment, you can access the reports and assign a grade using Speedgrader in Canvas.

  1. Click on the assignment that you want to view the report data.
  2. Select "Spreedgrader" on the top right corner.
  3. Review the PDF report of individual student data and provide a grade and a comment if you'd like.
  4. You can click on the arrow next to the student name to scroll through all of your student reports seamlessly and quickly.

Note: You can also access the Speedgrader from your Canvas gradebook.

Adding Nearpod lessons to a Canvas Module

If you don't need/ want your data in the Speedgrader, you can add a Nearpod lesson to a module as an external tool. This is great if you want to provide additional resources for students but don't need to gather the data or want to provide optional assignments to students so that they can continue their learning.

  1. Click the + next to the module you want to add a Nearpod lesson to.
  2. Click the drop-down and select "external tool".
  3. Browse the external tools and click on Nearpod (it will be in alphabetical order).
  4. This will open up all of your lessons that you have either created or added from Nearpod's library to your library.
  5. Hover over the lesson you want to add with your mouse or trackpad and click on either Live Participation or Student-Paced
  6. This will bring you back to the list of external tools and then click on "add item" at the bottom.
  7. Now students will be able to click on the Nearpod lesson from modules and click join lesson (their name will be auto-populated from their name in Canvas) and complete the Nearpod lesson as they normally would.

Note: All reports will be accessible in Nearpod reports (not the Speedgrader).
