How to use an Open-Ended Question during a Nearpod lesson

Add an Open-Ended Question to your lesson for students to respond with a written or audio response. You can also add media to your prompt, so students can refer to an image, text, audio, website, or PDF.

In this article, you'll learn how to:

Teach with Open-Ended Questions

When students reach an Open-Ended Question in a lesson, they will see your prompt and can:

  • Respond by text with up to 1000 characters  
  • Record audio with a microphone if enabled in advance by the teacher (not available on IOS) 
  • Access Reference Media added by the teacher, including video, audio instructions, web links, and images
  • Utilize the built-in text to talk accommodation for Microsoft Immersive Reader


As the teacher, you can view progress in real-time for the entire class, and share responses to student devices to ignite conversation and discussion.


Adding an Open Ended Question into your lesson

1. While editing your lesson, select Add Slide 


2. Choose Open Ended Question from the Activities tab


3. Enter your Open Ended question. Use text tools to change font size, color and more.  You can also choose to add reference media or a timer to your question.

4. If you'd like students to be able to respond with recorded audio, enable Student Audio recorder.



5. Click "Save" to save your Open-Ended Question
