How Teacher Moderation works for Student Accounts

Nearpod's Student Accounts are available for users within Premium Plus school and district licenses. Student Accounts gives students the ability to engage with Nearpods without losing progress. When Student Accounts are enabled, students can also create their own Nearpods.

Teacher Moderation allows teachers whose school or district has enabled Student Accounts and Teacher Moderation to access additional controls for student-created Nearpods. This feature requires teachers to join student-created Nearpods when launched before other students are allowed to access the Nearpod lesson, video, or activity. Once a teacher joins, they are added as a Co-Teacher to access additional controls.

With Nearpod's Teacher Moderation feature for Student Accounts teachers can:

  • Prevent students from launching and facilitating inappropriate Nearpod lessons, videos, and activities without a teacher joining first
  • Review and check a student-created Nearpod prior to additional students accessing the information in the lesson, video, or activity
  • Participate in student-created Nearpods as a co-teachers to ensure a streamlined and appropriate experience in the classroom

When launching a student-created lesson, video, or activity in Live Participation mode:

1. When enabled, students will launch their Nearpod and see instructions letting them know that their teacher needs to join the Nearpod lesson, video, or activity first before other students are able to join.

2. Students or guests who attempt to join before a teacher (non-student) has joined will be informed that the teacher must join first. They will be blocked from seeing the first slide in the lesson and will be prompted to click a "Try Again" button when their teacher has joined.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does the teacher have any control over the lesson once they join?
    • In Live Participant lessons, they will be made a co-teacher in the lesson and have co-teaching capabilities.
  • If the teacher leaves the lesson, does it become "locked" again?
    • No, once the teacher joins, the lesson code remains open to others to join.
  • Can students just make Silver teacher accounts and join and "unlock" their own lessons?
    • No, we require non-student accounts from the school or district to join so that students cannot simply unlock their own lessons by creating a Silver account.
  • How can students share their lessons with their teacher for approval?
    • We recommend using the lesson share links to share lessons with teachers.
      • Note: if a student generates and shares a code with a teacher that the teacher joins to review, this will in effect "unlock" the lesson for other students to join.
